Sunrise Over the Sahara: Three Days in Morocco

The alarm buzzed at 3:30 AM — a time no reasonable person should be awake. But as I stumbled into the cold desert air and looked up at a sky absolutely shattered with stars, I understood immediately why we had come.

Our camel caravan moved silently across the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the animals' footfalls swallowed by the soft sand. Our Berber guide, Hassan, led us with the quiet confidence of someone who has made this journey a thousand times, yet still finds wonder in it.

By the time we climbed the highest dune, a faint orange glow was already pressing against the eastern horizon. We sat in complete silence. Then the sun rose — not gradually, but all at once, flooding the dunes in shades of amber, rose, and gold.

Getting There

Fly into Marrakech or Fez. Rent a car or join an organized tour for the desert leg — the drive through the Atlas Mountains alone is worth the trip.
